Get your life together: how to create achievable goals

it is the new year, so all excuses about waiting for it are gone. Now it’s time to get our lives together by following the plans we made or dreamed.

Wait a minute, our whole life? That is a bit hefty. How can we get our whole life together in one night?

Well, you can’t. But there are ways you can plan and work towards achieving what you want.

If you think about it, there are categories to structured life:

  • Social
    • Love
    • Family
    • Friends
  • Health and well-being
    • Physical
    • Mental
      • Emotional
      • Intellectual
  • Personal character
    • Habits
    • Routines
    • Skills and projects
  • Financial
  • Career
  • Spiritual

Each of these categories are broad and are different for everyone. So how can we take control of each?


That is not something I can do in one post. Each week this month, I will delve into each category and guide you through creating your master plan.

On the broad scale, look at each category. What are some things you would like to accomplish or progress towards this year? That’s right, get out that pen and print out the GYFT worksheet one – broad plan, and let’s get our lives together.


Here are some questions for each category to help you if you feel stuck. This is just a free write, no pressure here. And you by no means have to have something for each category:

  • Social
    • Love
      • If you already have a significant other:
        • How do you feel in your relationship? Are there things you would like to improve on like communication or going on more dates? Are you moving in together or moving to a new stage in the relationship?
      • If you don’t have a significant other:
        • Maybe focus on the other categories more. You can make goals like “go out and meet people more,” “be more open to blind dates,” or other things as well. But don’t feel like you need to find someone.
    • Family
      • How is your relationship with your family members? Are you satisfied with these relationships? How can you change these relationships? For example, making time to visit your grandparents might be something you would like to do to get to know them better.
    • Friends
      • How big is your friend group and do you want it that big? Smaller? Bigger? Think about who you care about and how you can reach out and spend time with those people. Maybe a friend wants to try a yoga class you can also go to, or another friend wants to go on a trip. Who are we keeping this year and who are we going to focus less on?
  • Health and well-being
    • Physical
      • I’m going to stay away from weight in this part. If you are focused on numbers that is you. What are some fitness goals you would like to achieve? Run a 5K? Be more flexible? Bench 250 pounds? Creating a fitness goal like this is more motivating than looking at a scale. What would you like to achieve?
      • How are your eating habits? Are you putting good food into your body? To you need to increase your vitamin intake? How much water do you drink? What kinds of changes can you make when it comes to making healthier decisions?
    • Mental
      • Emotional
        • If you have a mental disorder, talking to a therapist or getting other kinds of help might be helpful if you are not seeing one already. Maybe there are other ways you should seek guidance. For others, how have your moods been? Are you too angry or sad most of the time? Are you a petty person? How can you make changes to be the person you want to be?
      • Intellectual
        • What are we learning this year? New language? What are your reading goals? Attending any classes?
  • Personal character
    • Habits
      • What are some habits you would like to change? Do you bite your nails? Sleep in too long? Always late?
    • Routines
      • Do you want to start an exercise routine? Change your night or morning routine? Do you not have any routine and would like to start one?
    • Skills and projects
      • What is something you would like to learn to do? Paint? Change a tire? Are you working on any projects? Writing a book? Redecorating the dining room? Maybe even building a shed? Learning a new instrument?
  • Financial
    • Do you own too many credit cards? Would you like to get a credit card? Are you making enough money? What kind of debts would you like to pay? What kind of job would you like to have?
  • Career
    • What kind of job would you like to have? Are you in the position you want or are you looking for a promotion? Do you want to change careers? Retiring? Just starting? Where do you see yourself in ten years?
  • Spiritual
    • For religious people, how connected have you felt? Do you want to go to church more often? Do you want to explore other options? Get in touch with nature more? Learn a new philosophy?


Using this worksheet, fill out some general things you would like to improve. If it helps, pick only some categories you would like to focus on instead of all of them, or just write one thing for all. Whatever you want.

This is not meant to feel overwhelming. We will break all this down in the next post into a workable, achievable goal list.

    1. This is a good question. I tend to have a clean space to work in, and then just go for it. I generally already have had the idea running through my mind before I sit to write, so I have already thought about what I want to say. This isn’t really helpful … I would try to focus and daydream on what you want to write about and just let your mind take you where you need to go
